8tracks… mine exists.

“bubbletastic lads” - depeche mode, new order, the cars, the smiths, the strokes, the clash, joy division, tears for fears, etc. etc.

Somehow, it’s already the middle of the summer. Tunes are easy to come by, for better or worse. Another mix appears in the wild! Time to catch them all.

1. Here, There, and Everywhere - The Beatles 2. Werewolf - Fiona Apple 3. Flapper Girl - The Lumineers 4. Sidecar - Kathleen Edwards 5. Towers - Bon Iver 6. Stuck On The Puzzle - Alex Turner 7. How (Live at Tower Theater) - Regina Spektor 8. Genesis - Grimes 9. Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks - The National 10. Cloudy - Simon & Garfunkel 11. Two Hearts in 3/4 Time - The Avalanches 12. Clone - Metric

The poor narrative implies… a rather lazy summer, actually. Wish I had done more. But when is that ever not the case? Next week: Chicago.

It’s been a while since I’ve made a mix… but March has had me traveling all over the place, with more to come. Plane rides and train rides tend to have a bit of musical consistency, songs begin to adhere to specific markers. And, of course, this Sunday is the return of Mad Men. Is it gauche to say that the show introduced me to Frank O’Hara? Either way, here goes nothing.

1. Emmylou - First Aid Kit 2. Letter to Elise - The Cure 3. Pawn Shop Blues - Lana Del Rey 4. The Girl - City and Colour 5. Six O’Clock News - Kathleen Edwards 6. Back Home - Gold Panda 7. All I Want - Joni Mitchell 8. Videotape - Radiohead 9. Dory Previn - Camera Obscura 10. Girlfriend in A Coma - The Smiths 11. At Last - Neko Case

Let us all meditate in emergencies. Or run towards the nearest glowing sign. I suggest the latter.

I feel as though I rarely listen to the ‘year’s best music’ the year it is released, but I’ve made a marginal effort this time. Rather than post my favorite songs of the year, I gathered my favorite ‘new’ songs and made a bit of a novelties mix. The truth is, most of this isn’t anywhere in my so-called ‘canon’, but I’ve never tried to form a playlist this way before, so… why not.

1. I Know Places - Lykke Li 2. Machu Picchu - The Strokes 3. One and Only - Adele 4. The Devil Is in the Beats - The Chemical Brothers 5. Grown Oceans - Fleet Foxes 6. The Rip Tide - Beirut 7. The Last Living Rose - PJ Harvey 8. Dealbreaker - Rachael Yamagata 9. Never Let Me Go - Florence + The Machine 10. Salinas - Laura Marling 11. Midnight City - M83  12. Trellick Tower - Emmy the Great 13. House - Patrick Wolf 14. Codex - Radiohead 15. Summer Camp - Summer Camp 16. I Don’t Want Love - The Antlers 17. Saying I Love You - Girls 18. Cruel - St. Vincent 19. Tigers - The Submarines

Ho-ho-hum. Contemporary music. Well, at least it’s not adult contemporary. Not quite yet.

A mix which grew out of complacent conversations with @questionablepearls and wanting to frame the month a bit better. I’ve been listening to slower music lately, which channels none other than the master (mistress?) of soothing tunes. November tends to have a sheen of lethargy, anyhow.

1. I’ll Keep It With Mine - Nico 2. Gravity Rides Everything - Modest Mouse 3. Salinas - Laura Marling 4. Marlene On the Wall - Suzanne Vega 5. Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead 6. I Found a Boy - Adele 7. Leave Me (Like You Found Me) - Wilco 8. I’ll Be Your Mirror - The Velvet Underground 9. Between the Bars - Elliott Smith 10. City Song - Emmy The Great 11. Flowers in December - Mazzy Star 12. Lucky You - The National 13. School Is Out - Regina Spektor 14. I Love How You Love Me - Jeff Mangum 15. Walk on the Moon - Asobi Seksu 16. Southernmost - The Lucksmiths 17. I Found a Reason - Cat Power

Oddly enough, this will be the first November @questionablepearls and I will not see each other after … four years? Which means these fine texts have emerged from the depths of iMessaging. Toho~.

Summer is over, and what better way to celebrate (?) than make yet another useless mix and ‘graphic’. I took the quote from my fav. piece of summer reading, This Side of Paradise by Fitzgerald. Go read it! Even I, a Gatsby detractor, swoon in the face of beautiful prose. Here are a few songs that infiltrated my summer, in no real order.
1. Tonight - Lykke Li 2. All My Friends (Franz Ferdinand Version) - LCD Soundsystem 3. All Day Long - New Order 4. East Harlem - Beirut 5. My Man - Regina Spektor 6. I’m Old Fashioned - John Coltrane  7. Let Me Know - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 8. Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground  9. Blue Spotted Tail - Fleet Foxes 10. Lost and Found - The Radio Dept. 11. Loud Pipes - Ratatat 12. Love Is Here to Stay - New York Philharmonic & Zubin Mehta

And so goes junior and senior years. Last time, I forgot to mention that each column is, more or less, a timeline of when I listened to a certain song enough for it to connote something specific to that year. But so it goes.
College, Part Deux
Originally 52 songs, narrowed down to 24, which seems less honest, but easier to digest.

Summer means unwarranted nostalgia. I did a run-through of my iTunes and made two playlists: one for the first half of college, and another for the second.
Part One. “Questionable”
Originally 43 songs, presented as 24. Maybe I’m finally reaching that age where the things I like don’t solely hold value in retrospect. Everything is a bit more static now. Maturity, here I come.
(p.s. the graphic looks “better” when you click on it) (p.p.s. yes those are my ‘alma mater’ colors. there is no time like the present when it comes to being lame)
